National Curriculum Plus Whilst following the National Curriculum and Qualification and Curriculum Authority guidelines the curriculum is not bound by them. We aim to extend and enhance all curriculum areas through outings to the theatre, museums as well as workshops and visiting speakers in school. French is taught in all year groups by a specialist teacher and full advantage is taken of the excellent music, design technology, science and physical education facilities. Key Stage 1 In Key Stage 1 firm foundations are laid in literacy and numeracy and these form a large proportion of the timetable. A variety of strategies are used to develop and extend reading skills. The girls have access to a wide range of literature through the school and class libraries. Basic number concepts are reinforced and extended, the core maths scheme allowing all pupils to work to their full potential. Much of the work in Humanities is based within a topic. Year 1 visit the Avoncroft Museum and Year 2 St. John’s Warwick as part of their history work. Art and craft activities involve painting, collage, clay work, sewing and model making.
Key Stage 2 All the National Curriculum core and foundation subjects continue to be taught, and NCKS2 tests are taken. The recent Inspection Report (October 2003) recognised as a strength “results at the age of 11 in national tests are very high”. All results are reported to parents. The girls thoroughly enjoy being challenged to learn new skills and knowledge. There are specialist design technology, ICT and science facilities within the Department. The curriculum is enriched by participation in activities such as the Cheltenham Music Festival and in interschool swimming competitions. The Under 11 tennis team have been Midland Bank Champions for the last four years. Girls can participate in a very wide range of extra-curricular activities.
